Today we experienced our first mercadillo (or street market) it was huge! Much like the farmers market with many different fruits, veggies, and live snails! They were very interesting and since they were all crawling around, did not look too appetizing. One difference from the normal farmers market back home was the amount of merchants selling everything from hand bags to clothes to even perfume! They had tons and tons of items to choose from and very good deals too. The most expensive things were the purses which were going for 9 euros. It was fun but by 11 the place was packed! It was definitely time for us to go and get ready for church.
Church was at the Captiana General. It was built in 1929 for the Exposicion Iberoamericana de Sevilla, which was a world’s fair. Pretty cool place there was tons of army personnel patrolling the building and right next door, attached to the building was the General’s home (he sat in front of us at church)! Any way the little church was inside this building and it was similar to the size of a chapel. There were a total of 10 pews (5 each side), but so many people attended this ceremony that there were chairs lined up outside the chapel doors and those were filled as well. It was very interesting to attend a Spanish mass. I have never experienced mass in another language before. There was no music and only lasted around 45 minutes but overall I would like to go again before our time here ends!
Lunch today…. Paella!! Oh man we were so excited! It was delicious. It had shrimp and calamari! Ugh so good. We ate the whole pan between the two of us. By far best meal yet!!
We spent about 2.5-hours reading our homework assignment for tomorrow, over 250 pages ugh. Meanwhile doing our first loads of laundry! Ha we told her that we didn’t mind doing our own and she just showed us how to work it and it was no problem! But since its so hot here, their drier is the good ol’ out doors. So we have to hang everything to dry. And today, it did not take very long; the high was is the 90’s! Chata said this is only the beginning and it’s going to only get worse. Bring on the heat ha!
After all that reading and laundry we decided to do a little exploring around Seville and went to the Plaza de España. This plaza was built for the 1928 for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929, which is better known as the world’s fair. Today its main purpose is to house government buildings but it is still beautiful to see!
